Why

ISLAMABAD: Just seven weeks after an
unpleasant wrangle in the Senate, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan is
again in the line of fire from political rivals.
This
is because of his good show on behalf of the government and his
straightforwardness and candour while speaking his mind on national
issues.Among the few federal ministers, who are delivering, matching the
expectations of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chaudhry Nisar stands out, and
this is what is not being stomached not only by some of his cabinet colleagues
but also the opposition parties in the National Assembly. At times, he has
earned severe flak on one lame pretext or the other for the crimes he has not
committed.
What
many can’t accept in the heart of their hearts is the lead role that Chaudhry
Nisar has been assigned to play in the government as well as the parliament. In
the absence of the prime minister, who hardly attends the parliamentary
sessions, he is spearheading the government side. He has even started presiding
over the meetings of the parliamentary party. A couple of days back he censured
some ministers for their poor performance.
Those
knowing Chaudhry Nisar since his landing in the parliament way back in 1985 say
that he is an upfront, no nonsensical and forthright person, who is not in the
habit of keeping his views to himself even if their expressing would exasperate
many including even some of his own ruling party associates.
Chaudhry Nisar Ali in the assembly on 16 December |
When
others occupying senior positions in the government are mostly hiding
somewhere, preferring silence on highly sensitive issues, Chaudhry Nisar would
not keep quiet, but would vent out his opinion uninhibited. Recently, when
there was no official reaction on the execution of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh leader Abdul Quader Molla by Dhaka, he dubbed it as a judicial murder. “Abdul Quader
was hanged through a judicial murder for supporting united Pakistan in
1971. He remained patriotic to the pre-1971 Pakistan
and his hanging had once again reminded Pakistanis of the wounds of separation
of East Pakistan.”
There
is a clear-cut contradiction in the instant boycott of the National Assembly
proceedings by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The
two parties are always at each other’s throats on all major and minor issues.
But now they have joined hands in their bid to embarrass the interior minister.
When
Chaudhry Nisar mentioned the term “tamasha” (circus or drama), triggering the
present storm in the teacup, he in fact referred to PTI’s clamour seeking
verification of voters’ thumb impressions in certain constituencies, which in
no way covered or was related to the PPP, but it still jumped in the fray
because it did not want to lose another opportunity to put the minister on mat.
Their
demand is the same – apology from Chaudhry Nisar – what the opposition parties
in the Senate had made. But the minister had contemptuously snubbed it, arguing
that he was not at fault and a bunch of senators had fueled the controversy at
somebody else’s behest.
Most
of the federal ministers including even those who are faring better than others
in the opinion of their boss mostly stay away from locking horns with the
opposition by not speaking anything that the opposition parties disapprove. But
Chaudhry Nisar is not that kind of person. He is always frank not only in and
out of the parliament and also in the internal high level meetings chaired by
the prime minister. Those who want him to change his temperament, character and
nature are sadly mistaken.
Early
last month, the opposition parties in the Senate led by the PPP (PTI has no
present in this chamber) had generated a serious controversy against the
interior minister after Senators Raza Rabbani, Aitzaz Ahsan and Zahid Khan had
a verbal duel with him. They worked hard for his leg pulling, and held the
“sessions” of the Senate outside the debating hall for one week, which was not
less than a joke, meant to undermine the parliament.
The
protesters finally wrapped up their agitation when Minister Ishaq Dar and
Pervaiz Rasheed approached them and held out assurances that Chaudhry Nisar had
already extended to them more than once inside the House.
“After
having failed in their efforts to malign me and in the process wasting huge
public money to be pocketed by them as travelling and daily allowances without
attending the Senate, a group of senators then blatantly decided to end their
boycott on the same assurance that I had already given in the Senate.
